Teaching Accent Reduction through Distance Education

Abstract

Increasing knowledge and awareness about accent minimization can assist individuals to achieve greater clarity of expression and, thus, improved social and employment prospects. What causes accents? Why do "we" often have problems understanding accents? What are some easy techniques to reduce accents without face-to-face instruction? Peggy Kayne, AU Tutor, will share her experience in researching, designing materials, and testing results since 1989, including significant keys uncovered to accelerating clear speech in foreign speakers of English. Veronica Baig, Coordinator, English Language Studies, will discuss how accents can interfere with employment and social success in Canada.
