| dc.description | The presentation occurred as proposed, to about 100 attendees. Dr. Pat Fahy and I were the first presentation on the first morning, after keynotes and other opening comments (the Minister of Education; an elder; drummers; conference organizers).
After the presentation, a producer for CBC North radio, Patti-Kay Hamilton, asked Pat and I to come to the CBC studios for an on-air interview, which we did later that day.
We feel that the presentation went well (we received comments in the lunch line from individuals, for example), and the CBC request suggests that a wider audience was deemed interested in the topic. A number of people requested copies of the presentation, which I have sent along to them today. The presentation will be published on the ACCC site, along with others. | en |
| dc.description.abstract | This presentation will report the research findings of the Alberta-North/Athabasca University research project, entitled “Attracting, Preparing, and Retaining Aboriginal and Low-Literacy Learners in Northern Communities”. The findings were gathered from several sources, including community consultations, learner survey results, and a review of the literature, all of which begin to suggest persistent themes, strategies, and necessities for attracting, preparing and retaining students in northern communities. Session participants will be invited to reflect on the research findings, and consider implications for practice. | en |
