dc.description | There were 25 participants spread among 3 tables discussing various issues at the Current Issues Forum. Participants were provided with the list of possible topics to discuss as per the attachment.
About every 30 minutes participants were given the opportunity to change topics at their tables or go to another table and discuss the topics there. Some people moved and other stayed at the same table and changed the discussion topic. Participants had opportunities to change tables or topics.
Participants stated that the topics were very timely and relevant to the work that they do in their libraries. There were technical services librarians from academic, public, and special libraries. As well, a library science student from U.B.C. attended as did an instructor in a Library Technician program. As one of the questions was about how to prepare students for working in the field, the input from the student and the instructor was most interesting. They also found this topic particularly of interest.
Participants went away from the session feeling like they learned a great deal from the discussion. It was very instructive to find out how other libraries are dealing with the same concerns especially related to the changes in workflow within the Technical Services Departments. General concern was raised about ensuring that long term staff are get training on new processes and practices especially with the new cataloguing rules coming in 2011.
Overall, the session went well and was very much appreciated by all participants. They look forward to continuing to have such fruitful discussions of current issues affecting Technical Services at conferences in the future. I have been asked to continue to moderate the sessions. Participants very much enjoy the informal learning atmosphere that is a hallmark of these sessions. I was told by a few that this is best part of the conference!
Thank you to the APDF committee for providing funding for me to attend the conference and moderate this session. | en |
dc.description.abstract | The Current Technical Services Issues Forum is an opportunity for people involved in the Technical Services area of libraries to share information about how they are implementing and using new technology to advance libraries and library service. As well, the Forum looks at issues that are of concern to practicing librarians and provides opportunities to discuss these with others practicing in the field. | en |
