A survey was undertaken to determine the number of students worldwide currently studying online. The authors surveyed 520 institutions whose courses are listed in the TeleCampus Online Course Directory to obtain enrollment data on a representative sample of 789 online courses randomly selected from a database of 17,000 courses. The primary objective was to determine how many students were enrolled in certain courses at an institution. However, the objective was not attained, due to the wide range of enrollment figures received and a poor response rate (14 percent). Although the poor response rate does not justify generalization of the data, the results may be of some use to researchers as a best guess.en
