From his Vancouver location, Dr. James Gifford, AU Tutor and Assistant Professor, Fairleigh Dickinson University, will use reproductions of the various bibliographical states of the graphic novel "V for Vendetta" to reconstruct the social function of remediation (from political agitation to instrument of cultural hegemony). A theory of media bias and social communication that bridges the Toronto, Birmingham and Frankfurt schools of culture and media studies will be elaborated by retracing the transformation of the comic from British underground pulp to American mainstream comices, to graphic novel, print media dna film. Critical paradigms developed while teaching CMNS 358 "Popular Culture" at AU will be discussed as part of a meta-critical project (rather than a study of primary text or print history).

The social media hype has created a lot of buzz among educators, but so far research on how such media are used to support learning in in its infancy. Dr. Stefan Hrastinski, Assistant Professor, KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Stockholm, Sweden) will provide a creative and collaborative presentation on the role of social media in the future of education. The discussion will be based on initial results from a study of how students use social media to support educational learning.

Physical exercise is a proven intervention that enhances psychosocial and physical outcomes in cancer survivors; however, despite these benefits, the majority of survivors are not meeting public health exercise guidelines. Dr. Jeff Vallace, Assistant Professor, Centre for Nursing and Health Studies, will examine the role of exercise in facilitating rehabilitation and recovery in cancer survivors--both on and off treatment. Exciting new evidence will also be summarized which suggests that exercise may even prevent cancer recurrence and prolong survival.

Compared to conventional snow measurements sporadically taken in situ, remote data sensing is particularly well-adapted to the monitoring of snow-covered surfaces over continuous space-time scales. A multi-sensing approach utilizing space borne sensors with a variety of spectral, spatial and temporal resolutions can meet the needs of climatologies and hydrologists studying climate systems who need to acquire snow cover information on both a fine temporarl scale and over large areas.

Since January 2006, while on a two-year sabbatical leave, Dr. Jon Baggaley, Professor of Educational Technology, CDE, has circled the globe five times, developing and supervising distance education research and development projects across Asia. Working on behalf of Canada's International Development Research Centre (IDRC), he has visited 19 Asia-Pacific countries from home bases in Indonesia, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Mongolia. While lecturing at most of the Asian 'mega-universities', he has since published four volumes of DE research findings, including a guest edition of the 'Distance Education' journal (Summer 2007). Results of current Asian evaluations of mobile learning, learning object development, and uses of open-source software for learning management and e-assessment will be presented. Inaccessibility of conventional western methods of DE delivery for millions of Asian students, and the innovative solutions created by Asian educators to solve the problem will also be highlighted.

Based on research undertaken in 2005, Dr. Cathy Cavanaugh, Assoc. Prof, Women’s Studies, Centre for Work & Community Studies, explores the relationship between Gladys Arnold, the only accredited Canadian Press journalist in Paris when France fell to German occupation, and her mother, Florida Mae Arnold Sutcliffe. Drawing on correspondence spanning more than 40 years, the research examines the bonds of affection between these two women, family tensions, and the important mother-daughter role that encouraged Gladys' efforts to establish herself as a journalist reporting from Europe between 1935 and 1940.

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) is a process designed to award credits towards a degree or certificate at AU and to open other doors to advancement. Although AU is the acknowledged post secondary practitioner of PLAR in Canada, other types of PLAR applications serve a varied clientele across the country. In an effort to recognize and perhaps establish national standards or some consistent understanding of this complex process, work is underway to build a national PLAR framework. Over a 12-week period, via synchronous online technology, students taking chemistry courses at AU were able to receive one-on-one tutorial support that included the use of a whiteboard and interaction with their classmates. For two hour sessions, three nights per week, students logged on to Illuminate and took turns asking questions and interacting with the tutor, in many ways resembling a traditional classroom. Dr. Lawton Shaw, Asst. Professor, Chemistry, Centre for Science, will describe a project piloted in 2006 utilizing this new mode of distance delivery for Science tutorials. Discussion will include participant demographics and feedback. Audience comments are welcome.

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition is a service to AU's adult and mature learners. The usefulness of PLAR as a tool is enhanced by understanding its as a learning activity rather than just an accreditation process. Dr. Dianne Conrad will outline how PLAR works as a concept, how it works at AU's Centre for Learning Accreditation, and the relationship between PLAR and the work of the Registrar's Office. She will also share preliminary research findings on the nature of mentoring students through the PLAR process.

Key features and benefits of using a semantic web in e-learning systems, along with the technology and non-technology challenges of developing semantic web based learning object services, will be examined by Dr. Xiaokun Zhang, Associate Professor of AU's School of Computing & Information Systems. Discussion, based on research and course development over the past two year, will include implementation strategies, especially focusin on personalized learning objects (or services) composition and separation of concerns with pedagogy models from adaptive learning objects through use of pluggable pedagogy ontologies.

With project goals being to educate, inspire, and engage youth in international trade topics in the context of the WTO, AU student, Matthew Huebert, will present areas of youth involvement and personal insights based on his experience at the conference: A youth perspective of the WTO, including the challenges in bridging differences between business and environmental developmental perspectives, YouthInside: What is it? How did it start? Where to go from here? The potential for similar projects to enhance education.

Karen Stauffer (Programmer Analyst) will show how the AU School for COmputing and Information Systems (SCIS) delivers content using device detection and style sheets for different types of mobile devices. Presenting results of recent Mission Critical Research which evaluated five technologies, AU's Dr. Robert Holmberg (Professor, Biology) and Konrad Michalski (Instructional Media Designer) will discuss options for returning marked assignments to students electronically, rather than by mail. Four of the five technologies allow handwritten comments, enabling easier/quicker marking for courses that involve graphs, equations and non-standard characters. This session will provide valuable information for those who evaluate/mark student's assignments.

Do promotions increase or reduce retail prices in the long run? Long-term effects of promotions on sales and brand goodwill are well documented in marketing literature. However, knowledge about how best to integrate these effects in pricing and advertising strategies over time remains very sparse. Dr. Simon P. Sigue, AU Associate Professor of Marketing, presents two analytical models to investigate the impact on consumer welfare and channel decisions of manufacturer-controlled and retailer-controlled promotions targeted at consumers. Sales promotion and its magagerial implications on channel of distribution decisions will be discussed.
